As a relative newcomer to the world of DIY, purchasing
and refurbishing my first property has instilled in me
a desire to learn more about it. In the past month I've
been following my builders around the house, pestering
them with questions about construction
techniques, the right materials to buy,
and, very importantly, which DIY
tools to use. It's not a question of whether
you should use a sander or a plane, but rather a question
of which sander and plane to use.
Bosch tools have over a century of experience behind them, and they have come highly recommended by almost everybody with whom I have spoken; and the range of their products is just as representative of their quality as their veterancy in the world of DIY power tools. Another stalwart of the power tool industry is Black & Decker - starting out as a machine shop in Baltimore owned by two young entrepreneurs, Black & Decker tools have been a staple of both professional and amateur craftsmen alike, and is now a truly international company, manufacturing and marketing high-quality power tools and all kinds of other home improvement products all over the world.
Both of these brands have come highly recommended from people I would consider to be in the know, but my personal recommendation in my (albeit limited) experience would be the range of Dewalt tools, especially their cordless range. In truly enlightened fashion, Dewalt have their own 'battery system', enabling you to use the same battery with some 38 different tools, from sanders to drills, from lights to lasers. A great idea, and one that saves both money and time, and encourages people to buy the whole range as opposed to just a couple of their tools.
I'm finding out a lot about power tools right now, but there's always more to learn!
