Ben Swett Biography Founder and CEO
Windowbox.com was founded by a group of balcony gardeners. (Actually, it was three balcony gardeners, a patio gardener, a few Porch People, a deck farmer and three self-proclaimed black thumbs). A website that provides container gardening solutions over the Internet, Windowbox.com caters to the urban dweller who wants to enjoy plants in their life but lacks the time, space and experience required for traditional gardening.
The President and CEO, Ben Swett, started the company in 1998 when he realized that professional people living in an urban area should be able to enjoy plants and flowers as much as someone living in the suburbs with a yard. Windowbox.com's mission is to provide useful information, advice, and supplies to help people experience the joys of growing plants in containers. Windowbox.com is committed to the idea that bringing people and plants together makes the world a better place.
Ben Swett began his career far away from his quest to bring people and plants together. He ran a dog food business for the Quaker Oats Company, after getting his MBA from the University of Chicago in Finance and Marketing. A BA English Major from Vassar, Ben wrote a lame novel, spent a few years writing TV comedy and a few more running a high tech manufacturing company, before his latent passion for gardening was reborn in late 1997 after a failed attempt at the seemingly simple task of growing a plant on his balcony in Los Angeles. Down but not beaten, Ben decided to unify several of his distinct urges: to run an organization that contributed to the social good, to find a sustainable creative writing outlet, and to satisfy – absolutely – the needs of urban ("container") gardeners everywhere. Hence, Windowbox.com
was born!
When you visit the site, you'll be taken on a virtual gardening tour. A good place to start is with The Floracle™, a computerized expert that will ask you questions, then tell you the perfect plant for YOU. A visit to the Design Queen will help map out your container garden, and a stop in Chef Clive's corner will update you on the latest in cooking with herbs and concocting your own beauty products made from plants – ones that can grow in YOUR very own garden. So much gardening information, so little time. It's just Windowbox.com trying to make your world a little greener, and a little bit more peaceful.

Start of the Season Gardening Checklist
Determine your budget. You can spend hundreds of dollars on fancy containers and exotic plants, or buy a $2 seed pack and plant in old milk cartons.
Check with your landlord if you rent your home, to make sure s/he's OK with your plans for a garden.
Check your supplies. If you've gardened before, see what condition your old pots are in. Double check the strength of your brackets and plant stands.
Measure your area. Figure your plants will be at least as big as your pots, and decide how much space you want your garden to take.
Get creative…The fun of container gardening is the freedom to move plants around and mix plants together in interesting combinations. Check out Windowbox.com's Design Queen Inspiration Gallery for ideas.
Determine the sunlight in your space (shade, partial sun, full sun). Think about your main objective - is it accessible and cheap herbs for dinner? Fragrant flowers to transport you back to Grandpa's farm? Simple, homegrown veggies for meals? A wall of green to block out the outside world?
Check with the Floracle at Windowbox.com to see which plants are right for you, and ask your neighbors what plants work for them. Keep your eyes open for ideas of which plants to adopt and how to mix them to create the effect you're going for.
Buy the basics: potting soil, fertilizer, watering tools, containers to match your plants and style, container supports. Or choose a garden kit with everything you need in one package!
Arrange your containers. Get your basic design in place before filling the containers with heavy plants and soil.
Get growing!!!
